How to Use Essential Oils

There are three ways to use essential oils; aromatically, topically, and internally.

The way in which you use essential oils depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  You will get the highest health benefits from therapeutic grade oils such as doTERRA.  Please be aware that not all essential oils can naturally be ingested. If you find a supplement fact label on the doTERRA, then you can safely ingest. Always consult a qualified professional who is knowledgeable about essential oils.

There are a few ways to use essential oils aromatically. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which are directly linked to the limbic system by way of the olfactory nerve. The limbic system is part of the brain that supports a variety of functions including emotions, behavior, and memory. Using essential oils this way is the fastest way to spark a reaction.

  • Use oils in a diffuser. I like the steam diffusers that automatically shut off after a prescribed number of hours. You can put one oil or a few different ones depending on your needs. I generally like to put about 3-10 drops in the diffuser.

  • Inhale the oils from cupped hands.  Place 1 drop of oil in your hands and rub together.  Then, cup your hands over your nose while keeping your hands away from your eyes. Inhale a few times.

  • Sniff the oil directly from the bottle.

  • Always use a carrier oil on your skin first before applying the essential oils. This will not affect the potency of the oils, but it will help the oils to absorb more slowing into your skin.  The coconut oil creates a barrier and will help prevent any skin sensitivity.

  • NEAT application means to apply essential oils directly to your skin. Not recommended.

  • Apply to the affected area of your skin by rubbing in the oils.

  • Never put oils in your eyes or ears.

  • Common places that you can apply oils to are the back of the neck, pulse points, bottom on the feet, chest, forehead, temples and stomach.  The application site will vary depending on the condition you are working on.

  • You can put a drop directly in your mouth. Do not put warm oils like Oregano and Cinnamon directly in your mouth.

  • You can also place 1-2 drops in water. Be sure to drink from glass or steel.  Essential oils are not good to use in plastic, Styrofoam, etc.. because those materials contain petrochemicals.

  • The last way to ingest oils is by making a veggie capsule.  You can purchase empty veggie capsules and fill the larger half with the necessary oils. You can fit about 12 drops in each one, but if you are new to essential oils, elderly, or young start off with less drops being about 5-7.
